Synergy - Three films

How and why do producers use synergy between products,  both secondary products and primary products of the same genre to attract audiences?

The three films that i will be discussing about is the silver linings, lincon and argo. All of the three films shows that they have similar synergy.

All three of these films have simlar synergy. If we look closely at all three film posters we would find that all of them has the same colour scheme.  The black and white theme has been used with hints of bold colours. Films have used this particular colour scheme because they want the audiences to know that the film is not based on a comedy genre therefore its based on something serious. Black and white colours shows a very serious and formal approach. The colour scheme aslo has a hint of bold colour for example 'The silver Linings' has the colour yellow to show the film as a calm and quirky film however the film 'Argo' has used the colour red on some parts to show danger. The hints of colours are based on what the film is about and it has been shown through specific colours. The film 'Lincon'  is based on on a historic film which means that they have used a very dark bronze colour in the film poster. The films also have similar portrait shots however they are in different angles as the portrait. The silver linings has a close up potrait which shows a division between the two main characters. They both have a half a portrait which signifys an eye to eye split personalty between the two characters. 'Argo' has an extreme close up shot of the character to create tension and danger. This close up shot draws a lot of attention to the audiences. The movie 'Lincon' has a close side shot which shows the main character facing down towards the title 'Lincon'. We also notice that film titles have been placed in a certain way so that the audiences cant miss it. For example the Movie ' Silver linings' has their title diagonally between the portraits. It shows a pattern of the important things going diagonally down from the top left right down to the bottom right. The film 'Argo' has their title right below the extreme close up eyes. This emphasises the tension even more and the use of capital letters in the title shows a very dangerous approach. The film lincon has the their title right below the characters chin and has the character facing down towards the title. This means that there is lot more to the title than what we see.  Analysing all three films we see a simlar pattern and all three films have the same motive which is to overcome something.  Most films who produce a movie like the three above are mainly the ones put for nominations at the Oscars purley because its very popular, therefore a lot of audiences would be watching it.

Star Power

- Star power has the ability to attract audiences therefore they can provide a guaruntee income. Star power means 'Opening the film' - E.g Jennifer lawrence is the number one actress in the world  because she has become very known for most popular movies.

- Sucessful films
- critical acclaim

2013 - Number one Star

Jennifer Lawrence is known for many of her movies but the movie that really pushed her to the number one spot was the movie 'Hunger Games' . The film had become a huge success as they had a budget of just $78,000,000 and had recieved a gross profit of $407,999,255. This clearly shows the success of the film and also the success of the actors within the film. Jennifer Lawrence played the main role which gave the actress more star power than the rest. Because of her Star Power she has the power to play any roles within the film industry. This had also meant that people within the film industry would want to have her play main roles to attract audiences  to their film. IMDB shows Jennifer Lawrence ranked as number 1 on the star meter.

How do the films in my case study use star power to attract audiences:

The three films that i have chosen is 'The hobbit' , 'Harry Potter and the deathly Hallows' and 'Snowwhite and the huntsman'.

Chris Hemsworth would be a great example of a star power as he has become a very popular actor for playing numourous roles in various movies.  Because of Chris Hemsworths star power, it attracts a wider audience which is great for the Film industry. This would would also encourage the audeinces to view the movies that chris hemsworth has been in and is currently in because they like that particuler character. Having Star Power also gives a greater advantage to the actor as they are able to get a guranteed film role as the main character and a guranteed income.

Using the IMDB website, Chris Hemsworth is ranked as number 19 on the Starmeter. This isnt suprising as the actor has played a role within well known Movies such as Cabin in the woods, Snowwhite and the huntsman, Avengers and Thor. The Snowwhite and the huntsman is a movie that had attracted a larger audience because of Chris hemsworth. However the Movie did not make extra profit as their budget = $170,000,000 and their total gross profit made was just $155,136,755 which means that they didnt make more than what they did budget.
However the Film Avengers was a very successful film as the film had a budget of $220,000,000 and had a gross profit of $623,279,547.

Chris Hemsworths popularity was not only based on films but it was also because he was known for playing a role in Home and Away and dancing with the stars which enabled him to pursue his career further on.

Beyonce - countdown

Key question : How do media producers use intertexuality to attract audiences to media products by broadaning the possible uses and gratifications?

Beyonce : Countdown

Beyonces single 'Countdown' had over 1.6 million streams on the internet in just under one week. Beyonce had been found to be very fond of  the performance of Lorella Cuccarini and Anna Teresa. From then on she has had her eyes set out on producing a similar  music video. The Music video Anna Teresa had produced during the time was one of the most populer because of the cheography used within the video. The video has attracted people who are most interested in dance.

The media producers have used intertexuality by using very similar features used in the video which was done by Steven Reich. The Music video at the time was done a very long time ago which means that Beyonces version of the Music video very upgraded due to the advanced technology nowadays.

Reason behind it?

Beyonce is a worldwide sensation selling over Billions of her singles. The music artist was motivated when she wanted to create something quite different by trying to mix styles from the 1990s and 1970's. Nowadays many artsists who have been successful tend to have fallen back and has become less populer simply because people change their opinions on them later in the future. Beyonce and her producer wanted to make this video so that they could prevent that from happening. The original music video was inspired by a huge group of people, which meant that beyonce has the chance to attract a particular group of people.

Difference?

There isnt much difference however because of the advance technology and the changes from then to now beyonce has attracted specific people interested in modern dance. From observing both videos people are able to see both versions of the music video. Beyonce's video has a lot of quick shots, different angles, More colour, More brighter and she has added more dance moves rather than copying everything from the orginal video. This shows the audiences that the dances has developed since then.

Nina Ricci - Chanel 05

The Nina Ricci advert and The chanel 05 advert has one thing in common. This is that they both advertise in perfumes. The Nina Ricci Advert has used very bright and fresh colours however the Chanel 05 advert has used quite dull and bold colours.

Ninna Ricci - We notice a quite young looking women wearing a pale pink dress. The young women has been modelled for this perfume advert so that the audience feels that the perfume makes them feel young, free and and in their fantasy world. The pale pink dress potrays a calm and relaxing feeling. There is no sense of danger happening. The main colours used in the advert are white and pale pink. This indicates a very peaceful yet rich setting. The diamonds used on the tree suggests glamour. All of this is linked in with the perfume. The bold red apples have been purposley placed in the advert to indicate the perfume as a sense of lightwieght/ healthy product. It has also been used to point out the uniqueness of that one apple hung on the tree. We notice the tagline in really smalll font ' The new magical Fragrance'. The ' Magical' suggests the perfume is not just any other ordinary perfume. 'New' suggests a more modern view of the perfume and the latest one yet. The womans hair in the advert almost suggests the 'real' her but the dress almost makes it feel like she is changing for the better. The womans face expression shows her gazing at the perfume as though she is amazed at it. Almost like a treasure in her magical world. This Advert would be aimed at ages 13- 16 years old. The advert portrays a fairytale magical world and those ages would most likely find it appealing.

Chanel 05 - We notice a young woman in a dark blue dress, hands on the blinds looking outside of a train window. If we notice very clearly by the womans body posture we can see that it almost looks like a letter 'c' to advertise the Chanel 05 perfume. The flexibility of her body shows the freedom and the glamourous life she has. Her heals have been placed puposley in that way so that the audience can notice the product itself. the product is their main goal but the audience has the picture to give them the idea of why people would buy the perfume. The colours used in the advert are very dull yet bold. The dark brown suggests traditional and class and the gold potrays the richness. This indicates that the perfume would be aimed at those who loves a glamour and posh life. The door has been opened to focus the light on the woman. This makes the womans skin look more brighter and the audiences visual on her is much clearer. The woman looks very slim which is what many women want to be. This gives out a life to all the women who desires to have. The perfect body, the glamourous life and the freedoom. This adverts does not include a tagline.

Both adverts are based on a perfume for women however they show a very different perspective/ view. The Nina ricci would be aimed at younger women as it shows a magical fairytale world however chanel 05 would be aimed at 20'and over. Most likely women from an upperclass life.

The film genre I have chosen to pick is historical. The historical film genre is all based on events, stories and famous people. All of these events have been set in the past. They have changed over the past few years because previous films often did contain historical people, but nowadays the main characters are fictional. When films were made before they sometimes present actual events from when people were living in that period of time. Famous events appear not recorded in history, but with fictional characters either observing or taking part in the actual events.

    Chosen Films

                                            Three Movies Chosen

    Blockbuster:

Bella Swan has always been a little bit different. Never one to run with the crowd, Bella never cared about fitting in with the trendy, plastic girls at her Phoenix, Arizona high school. When her mother remarried and Bella chooses to live with her father in the rainy little town of Forks, Washington, she didn't expect much of anything to change.

But things do change when she meets the mysterious and dazzlingly beautiful Edward Cullen. For Edward is nothing like any boy she's ever met. He's nothing like anyone she's ever met, period. He's intelligent and witty, and he seems to see straight into her soul. In no time at all, they are swept up in a passionate and decidedly unorthodox romance - unorthodox because Edward really isn't like the other boys. He can run faster than a mountain lion. He can stop a moving car with his bare hands. Oh, and he hasn't aged since 1918

The Hobbit - Countdown to the release

The Hobbit - Countdown to release

What do we learn about the echoes of the film?
We learn a lot of the echoes of the film. Unless we see how they produce the film, we dont really understand the key elements of producing the film. When we watch 'The Hobbit - countdown to release' we see that the film 'The Hobbit' has taken up a lot of time. There are over 1000 people working on the film which means that each of them have different roles.

What does this material offer the target audience?
This kind of material offers additional information on the upcoming film. For those who are huge fans of 'The Lord of the Rings' would interested in this new release. The countdown release clip encourages people to watch the movie because teh audiences are able to acknoledege the time taken to produce the movie. Inside the clip, the producer explains how 'The lord of the Rings' was filmed by using the one building however 'The Hobbit' was filmed by using 8 buildings. This shows the audience that the hobbit could be bigger than 'Lord of the rings'.

What kind of connection of use does it offer the audience?
It gives the audience a strong connection because the video explains how they were able to produce the movie. The audience can understand what the roles are inside the film making. They also get to see a few clips of the hobbits before the release which makes them eager to see the movie more.
