Film making techniques
Film making techniques
Film CHOSEN: The three
musketeers
When it was made:
The three musketeers was the movie I decided to watch and
review. The film is a 2011 3d adventure core product based on the novel of the
same title. The novel was written by Alexandre Dumas. Paul W.S Anderson is the
director of the core product and is well known for other movies as such the
resident evil movies. Paul W.S Anderson also known as Paul William Scott
Anderson is a British film director, screenwriter and producer who works on
filming science fiction movies and a few video games.
Where it was made: The three musketeers were filmed in
Bavaria, Germany with indoor shooting at the studio babelsberg.
The director has used various techniques within the film. He
has included a range starting from close up shots, long distance shots, high
angle shots, very quick snappy shots and more.
Due to the three musketeers being based around the romantic, historical
sub genre the director has made sure that the historic art of the movie remains
the same. The director has used the exact same storyline however they try to
change some elements of the movie so that the audience do not lose interest. The
core product has a lot of quick angle shots because of the drama. They have
used high contrast and brightness within the core product because the director
wants to make the audiences see the huge development from the last movie to the
new one.
How do directorial decisions change the final film?
Directorial decisions change the final film as they look at
the conventions of the core product and they analyze the previous core product.
They would observe the previous films and because the three musketeers were originally
made during the 1997 there has been numerous copy of the film made throughout
the years. The latest film of the musketeers is the 2011 film where we can see
the different elements used and why it’s different to the other previous films
made.

Intended Audience – Gender, Race, Age, Class
The gender most suited for Daily star would be both female and male. This is because the daily star includes News about football and includes pictures of ‘sports babes, celeb babes’ Etc. which can be appealing to a vast majority of men. Females would read the daily star as well because it talks about the celebrities and the recent gossip. The celebrities found in the newspaper are mainly male because females are then most likely to read it. The race is not an issue to who reads it. The Daily star reading age would be ages 18- 30 for females and males. This is because the daily star includes pictures that are not appropriate for people under the age of 18 and this would certainly not be aimed to be read at children because the reading/ writing would be difficult for them to understand and also because of the pictures.
It would most likely be the lower class background that usually look at the price and see the price as important. The daily star has put the price at the very top left hand of the page because they believe that the price would persuade people to buy their newspaper. They have also put the price number size bigger than their actual Newspaper name and have mentioned the price yet again on the right hand top corner. (Z reading, repeated price) which explains how the daily mail think the important of the price.
Current news values
Negativity – Mentions a lot of negativity involving celebrities. They include inappropriate languages for young ages for example the title below uses the word ‘Bitch’. They also tend to Use Capital Words all the time to over exaggerate the headline story. The Daily star also tends to use big black fonts and white background for their headlines most of the times so that they can make it look like it’s formal and important to read about.
Conflict – The exaggeration that the Daily Star makes about the celebrities may create conflict to the readers and the celebs themselves. This is because the story about the celebs may be entirely false and the readers may have a different opinion on them from what they did before. They may choose to dislike them because of the story they read about them.

Typical story
Ownership – who or what owns the paper and how do they affect the ‘Prioritisation’ of the news reported
Richard Clive Desmond (born 8 December 1951) is an English publisher and businessman. In November 2000, Northern & Shell acquired Express Newspapers from United News & Media for £125m which enlarged the group to include the Daily and Sunday Express titles, the Daily Star and Daily Star Sunday which Desmond himself started.
The Daily and Sunday Express each sold around 700,000 copies per issue. The Daily Star is currently the only national paper to put on sales year on year with an 18% increase (September 2008 – September 2009) and circulation figures of around 850,000, largely due to aggressive pricing policies which significantly undercut competitors such as The Sun.

FILM Sub Genre Review
Titanic (1997) Historic sub-genre film
Titanic was a film made in 1997 however this was not the first film made based on this tragic historic event. This film is the modern version of the real titanic event. The Sub Genre that fits into this film would be Historical, drama and romance. The historic genre in this film is based on a real event that happened during 1912. When this event happened, this was one to remember as the sinking of Titanic caused the deaths of 1,502 people.
Out of a total 2227 passengers and crew only 705 people survived the Titanic sinking. This was a major event as familys and friends had lost their loved ones.
The film/event also includes the sub genre 'Romance'. This is what really made the event more emotional. They focused two characters one from an upper class background and another from a lower class background and tried to understand the love they had when on the titanic ship.

Daily Star - Front page
DAILY STAR - Front page
![]() |
Todays Front page on Daily star |
Personality- The Front page of Daily star is mainly based on Nicole Sherzweiger and Chris brown . These are presented from a human interest angle and are very well known celebrities. Beacuse these celebrities are well known, lots of readers would be interested to read about what hasppened.
Negativity - In some ways this does potray a negative approach. Both celebrities have relationships with another person. The media may have come up with a false story which puts all four celbrities on a bad spot.
Exclusivity and size - The daily star has made this a news breaking story because the size of the images and the title explains the impotantness.
Ninni Ricci and Chanel 05 & Film review
Perfume Adverts
-------------------------------------------------
The Nina Ricci advert and The chanel 05 advert has one thing in common. This is that they both advertise in perfumes. The Nina Ricci Advert has used very bright and fresh colours however the Chanel 05 advert has used quite dull and bold colours.
Ninna Ricci - We notice a quite young looking women wearing a pale pink dress. The young women has been modelled for this perfume advert so that the audience feels that the perfume makes them feel young, free and and in their fantasy world. The pale pink dress potrays a calm and relaxing feeling. There is no sense of danger happening. The main colours used in the advert are white and pale pink. This indicates a very peaceful yet rich setting. The diamonds used on the tree suggests glamour. All of this is linked in with the perfume. The bold red apples have been purposley placed in the advert to indicate the perfume as a sense of lightwieght/ healthy product. It has also been used to point out the uniqueness of that one apple hung on the tree. We notice the tagline in really smalll font ' The new magical Fragrance'. The ' Magical' suggests the perfume is not just any other ordinary perfume. 'New' suggests a more modern view of the perfume and the latest one yet. The womans hair in the advert almost suggests the 'real' her but the dress almost makes it feel like she is changing for the better. The womans face expression shows her gazing at the perfume as though she is amazed at it. Almost like a treasure in her magical world. This Advert would be aimed at ages 13- 16 years old. The advert portrays a fairytale magical world and those ages would most likely find it appealing.
Chanel 05 - We notice a young woman in a dark blue dress, hands on the blinds looking outside of a train window. If we notice very clearly by the womans body posture we can see that it almost looks like a letter 'c' to advertise the Chanel 05 perfume. The flexibility of her body shows the freedom and the glamourous life she has. Her heals have been placed puposley in that way so that the audience can notice the product itself. the product is their main goal but the audience has the picture to give them the idea of why people would buy the perfume. The colours used in the advert are very dull yet bold. The dark brown suggests traditional and class and the gold potrays the richness. This indicates that the perfume would be aimed at those who loves a glamour and posh life. The door has been opened to focus the light on the woman. This makes the womans skin look more brighter and the audiences visual on her is much clearer. The woman looks very slim which is what many women want to be. This gives out a life to all the women who desires to have. The perfect body, the glamourous life and the freedoom. This adverts does not include a tagline.
Both adverts are based on a perfume for women however they show a very different perspective/ view. The Nina ricci would be aimed at younger women as it shows a magical fairytale world however chanel 05 would be aimed at 20'and over. Most likely women from an upperclass life.
Film Genre - Historical
The film genre I have chosen to pick is historical. The historical film genre is all based on events, stories and famous people. All of these events have been set in the past. They have changed over the past few years because previous films often did contain historical people, but nowadays the main characters are fictional. When films were made before they sometimes present actual events from when people were living in that period of time. Famous events appear not recorded in history, but with fictional characters either observing or taking part in the actual events.
The Duchess is a 2008 British drama film directed by Saul Dibb. It is based on Amanda Foreman's biography of the 18th-century.
This is the film i had watched for the task given - Agora is a 2009 Spanish English-language historical drama film directed by Alejandro AmenĂ¡bar and written by AmenĂ¡bar. The story uses historical fiction to highlight the relationship between religion and science. The title of the film takes its name from the Agora, which is a gathering place in ancient Greece. This films dramatizes the events that happened in the life of an incredible woman. It was set in Roman Egypt in the fourth century. 'Agora' tells the story of the legendary Hypatia, trapped in the library of Alendria, and her fight to save the old worlds wisdom from the religious riots sweeping the streets of Alexandria. The slave 'Davus' fights for freedom and his love for his mistress.
Historical Films have changed over the past years because they have used lots of different camera angles, there is more drama and action happening. Althought the movie looks quite modern the audiences are able to tell that they have tried to make the old history look more modern. The colours used in the movie are not bright neither too dull. Beacuse thhis film is based on history, the director needs to make sure that the place or setting or charaters look too modern or it wouldnt be seen as a historical film to the audience.

Camera Angles
Low angles are being shot so that it makes it look taller
and emphasizes the power the subject has.
Eye Level Camera
Angle
Eye level means the subjects identity is more focused on
therefore we are able to find out the subjects emotions.
The high angles
High Angle shots are a very useful shot to take as it shows
the audience an overview of the area and the scene.
Cantered view
The cantered view angle produces an unstable picture which
may suggest the feeling of excitement or fantasy to the viewer.
Worms eye view
This angle is an angle where the viewer looks beneath the
object of interest. Its almost like the opposite of the Birds eye View.
Bird’s eye angle
The bids eye view camera angle is a shot looking directly
down on the subject. This is so that it emphasizes the insignificance of the
subjects and gives viewers a large shot of the scene.
Over the shoulder camera angle
This shot is of someone or something taken from the angle
from the shoulder of another person.
This is a very common shot when we see two characters having a discussion.
Point of view camera angle
This shot shows what the subject is looking at which has
been represented through the camera. This way the viewers feel as if it was
them and they get to see what emotions they get from the opposite subject.
Extreme close up shot camera angle
This is very similar to a normal close up shot however this
shot is an extreme close up shot. This is sometimes inches away from the actors
face or an object. This way the viewers are able to see a closer expression on
the actors face.
Close up camera view
This is a shot taken from a close rang. The shot is designed
to focus on the subjects expression or to direct the viewers to some important
element of the film.
